My cooperating teacher asked me to create an art lesson for Halloween so I decided to teach students a technique called "Relief" which esstentially teaches them about foreground and background. I had students think of different objects/figures they could create and how they would illustrate their foregrounds against a solid background. I also encouraged students to add texture to their artwork. After students created their backgrounds and the plasticine was spread out, they put the first piece on the floor, put a piece of paper down on top of the background, and then stomped and jumped on their backgrounds. This created different textures in the pictures.Other students simply used their fingers to create texture. The backgrounds took an hour to complete so we finished the foregrounds the next day which also took an hour. They did a wonderful job!

Those look great Allison! I have always wanted to try an art project like that. Do you have any suggestions if I were to teach it? Were all the students able to do it?
Make sure you cut the plasticine into small blocks prior to the lesson so it is easier for students to work with. All students are able to do it. My autistic student had great success. Make sure you leave yourself two art periods for this activity as the background can take up to an hour to complete. Oh.. and wash your hands before you help a student as the colours tend to run! Red is not the best colour for a background and I would not recommend yellow. When you do this lesson try to get the books written and illustrated by Barbara Reid such as Fox Walks Alone. Show students pictures of what they will be making so they know what is expected and what their pictures will look like. Of course, the pictures will not be as detailed as Barbara has done. Check out this website. She has listed some pictures and ideas for creating the Relief pictures.

That's a great art project. It's something that you could use for any topic. They look really good.
The art project looks great and kids love to work with plasticine! Thanks for the tips regarding the length of the project and color running.
